Overview

Where the group operates.

Our divisions were not designed on a whiteboard. Each one grew out of a business we already owned and understood, and each still earns its place by contributing to the group's long-term capital base. Together they give us a useful range of exposures: physical trade, manufactured goods and recurring software revenue.

Group companies trade with one another where it makes commercial sense — Meridian sources metals for North Industrial, North Technology supplies software to several portfolio companies — but never on preferential terms. Every internal contract is benchmarked against the open market.

Division 01

Meridian Commodities

Commodities · London · Rotterdam · Singapore

Meridian is the group's physical and derivative trading desk. It handles base metals, energy products and agricultural inputs for industrial consumers across Europe and Asia, and manages price risk for the group's manufacturing companies.

The desk is deliberately mid-sized. We are not a market-maker and we do not take large directional positions; the business is built on logistics, warehouse relationships and knowing the counterparties on the other side of a contract.

Division 02

North Industrial

Industrial · Sheffield · Leeds · Rotterdam

North Industrial is the oldest part of the group and still the largest by revenue. It comprises seven manufacturing and materials-handling businesses serving energy, rail, construction and water utilities.

Much of what these companies make is unglamorous and essential: machined components, valve assemblies, lifting equipment, filtration units. The division invests steadily in apprenticeships and in replacing capital equipment before it fails.

Division 03

North Technology

Technology · Leeds · London

North Technology owns four software businesses providing maintenance management, field-service and regulatory reporting tools to utilities, transport operators and healthcare providers.

Products are sold on annual subscription and implemented by in-house teams. The division has grown mostly by adding adjacent products to existing customers rather than by acquiring new logos, and it is deliberate about staying out of markets where it cannot support customers directly.

Working with the group

If you are selling a business.

We look at a small number of opportunities each year and move slowly on all of them. We are most useful to businesses with £5–100 million of revenue, a management team that intends to stay, and an owner who cares what happens next.

We will sign a confidentiality agreement before receiving any information, and we will tell you quickly if we are not the right buyer. Our longest acquisition, from first conversation to completion, took six years. The shortest took four months. Both are still in the group.

Initial approaches can be made in confidence to the group's corporate development team.
